MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AP) - The state government has set up a system for people to apply for oil spill cleanup jobs should they become available on the Alabama coast.

Officials with the Alabama Career Center System say people can apply online and click on the link for "environmental cleanup," or they can apply at their local Career Center office.

BP and its contractor, P2S, are looking for as many as 1,000 workers for beach cleanup if the oil comes ashore in Mobile and Baldwin counties. The Alabama Career Centers will forward the applications to BP. Recruiters from P2S will then contact individuals.

Officials say residents of Mobile and Baldwin counties will be given preference, and proof of residency is required.
