GULF SHORES, Alabama (WALA) - Double red flags have been flying on Gulf Shores since June 11, warning people to stay out of the water. But now, one of those flags has been lifted, just as it was yesterday at Orange Beach.
Right now, there are not any clean-up crews on the beach, and there's not much oil to be seen. However, some people are still leery about going for a dip in the Gulf, but others couldn't wait.
"We took the grand-kids to the beach and they couldn't understand why they couldn't play in the water and they could just play in the sand," said Patsy Ronemous.
But now, the Gulf is open, and for some folks, it couldn't have happened at a better time.
"This is our last time for the summer so we wanted to come to the beach," said Myra King.
Although the Gulf looked beautiful some folks said they still have some concerns. But those concerns, didn't keep them out of the water.
Matt Ronemous said since the double flags have been taken down, he couldn't wait to take his two and three-year-old kids in the Gulf.
He said the single red flag that's flying over Gulf Shores doesn't worry him.
"We haven't seen any oil. It's been fun, it's been great. No problems," Ronemous said.
"I don't see anything that would hurt us right now," said Charlotte McGregor.
However, most folks said they will be taking extra precautions when they get out of the Gulf.
"When we go home, they're going to get bathed with a lot of soap and water," explained Carmen McClellan.
Now that the city has reopened the water, everyone's hoping this is just the beginning of things getting back to normal; just the way they were before the oil spill.
