GULF SHORES, Ala. - Spring Break has arrived for public school students on the Alabama Gulf Coast. We have some alerts for parents before your child heads out to the beach.
Highway 59 south is packed with drivers heading to the beach.
But local authorities say you should slow down, think about your
surroundings, and be safe.
Just this week, a man was arrested for stealing from unlocked
cars. Locking your doors is something police say should be habit
when stepping out.
Eddie Thomas and his friends say they don't take any chances.
"I live in Missouri, out in the middle of nowhere, so I keep my
doors locked anyway, cause I don't trust anybody," said Thomas,
"not only happens here, but anywhere."
"I really don't have anything they can take, if I had money
or whatever, I would keep it in my pockets," said vacationer Mary
Garrison.
Gulf Shores Police say on the beach they haven't had any
major crimes reported. But they warn vacationers, criminals are
always on the prowl.
In another alert, beach security officers say spring break is
a time when teen accidents can be deadly. "Use the buddy system,
don't do anything stupid, don't drink and drive, use your
seatbelt," said Shelby Coram, vacationer.
And Friday, red flags were also posted. When you see these
flags that means the surf is strong, and it's best to stay out of
the water.
If these advisories are followed, authorities say Spring
Break should be safe for everyone.
