1 dead, 3 injured in U.S. 98 accident

DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - Family and friends of Chequita Chaney Grier gathered at her mother’s home to console and comfort one another.  Forty seven year-old Grier, better known as Faye, was killed Friday, February 1, while at a stop sign at the corner of Pickett Avenue and Highway 98. 

Police said a car traveling northbound lost control and struck Grier’s car on the driver’s side.

“It was just unbelievable losing her and then the grandkids and the daughter. It’s just unbelievable,” said Grier’s cousin Katherine Mitchell.

The family isn’t just mourning Grier’s death. They’re also praying for her daughter and two grandchildren who were in the car.  They were all life-flighted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. 

The grandchildren, ages five and three are both in critical condition. Family members said doctors only give the 3-year-old boy a five percent chance of survival.

“The daughter and the granddaughter are pretty much stable, but it’s still touch and go with the grandson,” Mitchell said.

Police said the driver of the other vehicle was a 16-year-old Daphne High School student. They’re investigating why she lost control of that vehicle.

“She did lose control of her vehicle, tried to over correct it appears and then lost control and we have an unfortunate accident,” said Daphne Police Chief, David Carpenter.

Police said the driver of the other car was on her way to school. Family members remember Grier as a loving woman and leader of the family.

“Our hearts is breaking and with Faye being such a good person and you know she was so interested in school, very Christian-like and it’s just really sad,” Mitchell said.

No Charges have been brought in this case. The accident is still under investigation.  The family of Faye Grier asks you to keep them in your prayers
