DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - Baldwin County Probate Judge Tim Russell told FOX10 News the turnout for today's election is on pace to exceed the 70 percent participation record set back in 2008.
That means as many as 88,000 voters may cast ballots in Baldwin County this Election Day. So far, no major problems have set back voting. Officials said machines across the county are working smoothly but, with such large numbers, long lines are a certainty.
Busy polling and long lines have been reported in Foley, Gulf Shores and Fairhope. Polls close tonight at 7 p.m. and voters must be in line by that time to cast their ballots.
The biggest issue, besides the presidential race, that's drawing Baldwin County voters to the polls is the one cent sales tax extension put in place for schools. Voters first approved the tax in 2010 as state funding was cut. The tax will end in May 2013 if it's not renewed by voters on Election day.
Annually the tax raises $28 million for Baldwin County schools, according to officials.
