Baldwin beaches to get $7 million makeover

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - It has been a few years since Baldwin County's beaches have received a much needed re-nourishment.

In that time, storms like Ike, Gustav and Isaac have eroded away a lot of sand. In response to the wear, workers will spend the next few weeks getting the coastline back in shape.

The project is expected to cost $6.8 million dollars.

As the harvested sand is placed along the beachfront, safety zones will be setup to allow crews uninterrupted working conditions.

Contractors expect to complete approximately 1,000 feet of coastline per day as they make their way from Laguna Key through Gulf Shores and Orange Beach to the Alabama/Florida line.

Gulf Shores will be responsible for about $1.1 million of the total project cost, while the Federal Emergency Management Agency will fund 75 percent of costs and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency will cover another 10 percent.
