LILLIAN, Ala. (WALA) - The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said they are conducting an investigation Tuesday after human remains were found in the Lillian community.
Officials said on Dec. 17, deputies received a call about possible human remains located in the Lillian community.
Buford Baily, who lives across from the crime scene off Route Road, told FOX10 News his teenage neighbor made the discovery.
"He was riding his four-wheeler, and he saw this object laying in the middle of the (road)," said Baily. "So the dad went over there and took flashlights and saw it. He called me and said, 'Do you have a light?' And I said, ‘Yes.’ And he said, ‘Come over. I want you to take a look at this.’"
Baily said he saw skeletal remains that we're not intact.
"You know, you don't see that very often. And when you do, you’re not sure," he said.
Officials said investigators arrived on the scene around 9 p.m. and determined the scene would need to be held by deputies until a daylight search could be conducted.
On Tuesday, Dec. 18, deputies said investigators returned to the scene and processed it for evidence. They said human remains were recovered from the scene and turned over the Baldwin County Coroner's Office.
The remains will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Mobile.
The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said the case remains under investigation, and no further details released at this time.
