GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - BEER AT THE PIER?
Since it's opening in 2009, the Gulf State Park Pier has become one of the most popular attractions on Baldwin County Beaches. There’s a mix of tourists, locals, and hardcore anglers enjoying mother nature.
But some of the regulars feel the peace is threatened if alcohol comes to the pier.
"We've got a lot of visitors and kids and that sort of thing and don't think this is the environment for it. We got a family oriented place here and I think that's the way it should stay," said Dan Smith.
Recently the park filed an application for a liquor license with the city of Gulf Shores. An affirmative city council vote Monday, November 5 would be needed for approval.
Visitor Peggy Jo Christian told FOX10 the city might want to be careful about granting that license.
"You can't control how much somebody drinks," Christian said. "It looks like it might open it up, if you’re talking about right here, to a big liability."
"BAR" & GRILL
The alcohol application would be for a grill that's to be built under the pavilion, which is at the base of the pier.
Park officials said alcohol would still not be permitted past the gate and out onto the pier itself. So folks couldn’t wheel out coolers full of beer.
Some regulars feel if alcohol is contained in a regulated way they could live with it.
"I'm a member of the [pier] forum and I know some of them don’t agree with that but I do agree with it. I think it would be a great idea," regular Danny Wood told FOX10.
