ORANGE BEACH, Alabama (WALA) - Marine Police say a boating accident took the life of a Louisiana man. The accident happened in Old River South of Ono Island.
Authorities say 41-year-old Brent Poor was on 24-foot boat going tubing with his family when he was struck by his own vessel while he was in the water near it.
The coroner's office said Poor hopped in the water to untangle a rope that connected to a flotation device while the motor was running.
The official said the boat was then accidentally put into reverse.
Poor was pronounced dead at the scene.
Many accidents are preventable, but sometimes they cannot be reversed.
Marine Police say it was an accident that killed Poor.
"It's not unusual but it's not something we like to see," Tom Steber, the General Manager of Zeke's Landing said.
Marine Police say alcohol was not a factor, but it goes to show that any fun day could go awry.
Boaters say it's important to follow Coast Guard regulations and to wear life-jackets. And while fun is a priority, it's vital that you protect yourself from falling overboard.
Marine Police say the body will be sent in for autopsy and the case is still under investigation. But they say charges will not be filed.
