GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - The Gulf Shores Police Department said skeletal remains found on the beach in September were those of a man who went missing while on vacation with his family.
The bones, identified as the remains of 32-year-old Eric Pye, were analyzed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Science after boaters found them near the state pier.
GSPD detectives said they secured a sample of Pye’s DNA from his mother, which led to the identification of the remains.
“We would especially like to thank the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Mobile laboratory for their quick response,” said GSPD Chief Ed Delmore. “Their timely results have allowed the Pye family to have answers that so many never get.”
Pye went missing in June while swimming with his son in the Gulf of Mexico.
Witnesses said they were both pulled out by the current but Pye’s son was able to swim back to shore. Pye was pulled under the rough surf. The waters were closed as tropical storm Debby approached in the gulf.
Rescuers with Orange Beach and Gulf Shores Police and the US Coast Guard searched for days after the swimmer went missing, but were unable to find him.
