Camp broken into on Gravine Island

GRAVINE ISLAND, Ala. (WALA) - There's been another criminal incident on Gravine Island.

Authorities arrested two people for burglarizing a camp Wednesday night.

 Baldwin County Sheriff's Deputies said the camp belongs to one of the men whom investigators said confronted teenagers in the case that led to the shooting death of Summer Moody.

 Deputies said Matthew McDowell is charged with third degree burglary, and Christopher Andrews is charged with second degree burglary and third degree robbery in the incident Wednesday night.

 Deputies said the camp they burglarized is owned by Lonnie Davison.

Davison was one of a group of men investigators said confronted teenagers who were burglarizing fish camps back in April.

 Authorities said, at that time, a group of men fired warning shots, and one shot hit Summer Moody, who later died.

 Deputies said in Wednesday night's burglary, Davison's son Wayne, and another person, came to the camp and saw a boat there.

 Major Anthony Lowery said, "They began to suspect that somebody had burglarized, or was in the process of burglarizing, the camp.  As they approached, they were armed with a rifle, they called out."

 Deputies said McDowell came out and raised his hands, but not Andrews.

 Lowery said, "He was verbally abusive.  He actually struck our victim, Mr. Davison, in the face."

Deputies said McDowell and Andrews got in a boat, but Davison and his friend followed them in their boat, and called Marine Police.

Marine Police then arrested the suspects.

 But, Lowery wants to emphasize this case, and the Summer Moody case, are not related.

He said, "There's no connection with this case and the Summer Moody case. Those burglars who were arrested in that case are totally separate and apart.   The camp is one of the camps that was involved in the Moody case the witnesses were staying, but none of the parties in the Moody case were present last night."

 Steve Stagner also owns a camp on Gravine Island.

 He said he heard about the incident Wednesday and went up to check on his property.

 Stagner said he's frustrated by crime on the island.

He said, "There's been people stealing copper out of people's camps.  We don't leave nothing of value there, so there's nothing to get.  I would hope they wouldn't want my bed sheets because that's about all that's there."

Deputies have some advice.

Lowery said, "The right thing to do is to contact Marine Police, or the sheriff's department, and let us do the enforcement."

 Andrews is also charged with boating under the influence.
