ROBERTSDALE, Ala. - Local charities are preparing for another busy season. Just like last year, the number of families in need are up, because of the economy.

For Rachel Davis, this holiday season could be one without much cheer. She has four kids, doesn't have much food in her home, and her husband was laid off.

"That was our source of income. Besides, he gets a little bit of disability, too," said Davis.

To make matters worse, she was recently laid off. That's why Davis went to Catholic Social Services in Robertsdale.

Here, volunteers are working harder these days to help those who are struggling.

"Terrible things going on in the economy, and we see so many more new people," said Director Michele Prockup.

The director said shelves were almost empty, but donations are starting to pick up. The more food they receive, the happier families in need will be.

"It's a great blessing for people to donate to us," said Prockup.

Davis got some help Wednesday, but she doesn't want to make this a routine trip.

"If I get better off, I hope I can help someone else that needs it," said Davis.
