Family, friends of Allen Davis hold memorial for hunter

DAPHNE, ALA. (WALA) - A Daphne man who was killed when a crossbow discharged inside his car was laid to rest Wednesday, January 23.

Family members and friends attended the funeral for Allen Cade Davis.            

Many of those who filled the Jubilee Baptist Church Wednesday morning said it was hard to believe the 24-year-old was really gone.

Some of Davis' friends said they found out on Facebook.

"It was really like a dream. We didn't believe it, nobody did," Christiana Lanham said.

"It shouldn't have happened.  It was seriously just a freak accident, mishap, whatever you want to call it just should never went down," Miles Sanchez said.

Police said Davis and two friends were hunting deer Saturday night along Barber Marina Road in Orange Beach when a loaded crossbow stored behind the driver's seat went off, piercing Davis through the chest.

"I don't understand it. I really don't," John Calhoun said.

Calhoun, a longtime family friend said he cried when found out about the tragedy.

"I was in the woods with my son, and I got a text message that told me, and I sat down in the woods and cried then, because he was a good kid," Calhoun said.

Calhoun is a hunter himself.

"Normally, one wouldn't be cocked or have a bolt in it until you're in the woods and in your stand. All of them that I've ever used have a safety on them just like a gun, so if the safety's on chances are it's not going to go off. So, I don't understand this," he explained.

"I just couldn't believe it. Just such a tragedy and my heart goes out to the parents, because I'm a parent," Jane Rainwater said.

"I don't know what happened. I really don't know all the facts. It's just so hard to fathom that it even happened," Judy Pritchard said.

While police are calling the incident accidental, the case is expected to be presented to a grand jury for review.
