DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - Daphne City Councilman Dane Haygood has been sworn in as the city’s new mayor. He was elected by the Daphne City Council to serve as mayor for after Mayor Bailey Yelding passed away January 22.

Officials said Haygood will serve the rest of Yielding's term, which began in October 2012.

According to those close to Yielding, he’d been battling cancer.

Yielding served on the city council for over a decade before being appointed to the mayor’s position in 2011 when Mayor Fred Small resigned.  He then made history when he was elected the first black mayor in the city’s history in October.
