DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - Daphne city councilman Derek Boulware was knocking on doors and campaigning on Monday, a day before the city’s mayoral runoff race.
Incumbent Mayor Bailey Yelding is facing challenger Derek Boulware. In the August 28 election, Yelding received 32 percent of the vote, to Boulware's 45 percent and since then, Boulware said he has been working twice as hard.
“Going door to door has really allowed me to interact with the folks and engage with the public. You know what the public wants and you can respond to it,” said Boulware.
With Airbus landing Mobile, Boulware said he wants to focus on building a city that's fiscally responsible and one that's sought after from locals in Mobile and Pensacola.
"Streets, sidewalks parks, the things that make a community great. We have those and we want to improve it," he said.
Boulware said he wants a city that moves forward. That's one point where both candidates agree. When Yelding was appointed interim mayor a year ago, he said, “I've always wanted Daphne to be a city that moves forward. That’s why I joined the city council so I'm excited to continue to move forward.”
Fox10 reached out to Yelding on Monday before the runoff but he was too busy to meet up with us.
Boulware has served as a city council member four years while Yelding served on the city council 11 years before becoming interim Mayor in October of 2011.
Yelding was appointed to the spot after former Mayor Fred small resigned last year.
Ultimately the decision on who becomes Daphne's next mayor is in your hands. You just have vote.
