Fmr. Daphne High School student arrested on theft charges

DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - Richard Brett Langley was escorted out of the Daphne Police Department Tuesday afternoon, December 10 and taken to the Baldwin County Jail.

Police have been trying to catch up with 18-year-old Langley since a second-hand computer broker in Mobile became suspicious of a purchase he’d made.

“He got suspicious when he turned them on and they said 'Property of Baldwin County Board of Education', so that’s when he contacted the Mobile Police Department and, of course, through our contacts with them, they contacted us and that’s how we got that investigation started,” stated Lt. Judson Beedy with the Daphne Police Department.

The computers were returned to the school system and investigators began their search for Langley.

Things came to a head Monday when Daphne High School had to go on a modified lockdown due to threats allegedly made by Langley to students there.

“He told an individual that he was going to hurt the people at a house over the weekend, and then we intercepted some electronic messages that he had sent some people that kind of indicated that he was going to follow through with those threats,” Beedy said.

Police were tipped off as to Langley’s whereabouts before he could act on any alleged threats.

“About 8 o’clock last night, we were made aware of where he was supposed to be at a certain time and a certain place and we had officers waiting for him when he showed up,” Beedy said. "Those officers took him into custody without incident."

Langley has been charged with six counts of receiving stolen property and Daphne Police have added a charge of disorderly conduct for the alleged threats made to students.

The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office also had a warrant on Langley for felony assault, and a department spokesperson said they plan on bringing additional charges against him, but would not say yet what those charges would be.
