DAPHNE, Ala. - Highway 181 is going to become a four-lane roadway. The widening project will extend between Highways 64 and 90. Construction started in June.
Most drivers who talked with FOX10 News say the heavy traffic on Highway 181 is more than a headache, it's a migraine. But the new widening project will ease traffic here tremendously.
The project has already got the green light and is now in the works. There are new posts, workers are digging, and equipment is moving in.
The only thing that could put the brake on things is the weather. For now the project is flowing smoothly. But the project is causing inconvenience for some businesses. Café Malbis had to rip up their signs, because the four lane project will take over their entire parking lot.The new parking lot will be in the back.
However, manager Justin Hanks says the inconvenience is worth it. "I lived here my whole life. They have been talking about it and they could have started ten years ago, would have made me a lot happier," said Hanks.
And when all is said and done, Highway 181 will double in size and double in driver happiness. The project costs $12 million of your federal dollars and should take a year to complete.
