Officials: Deck collapses on spring break vacationers

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - Authorities said six spring break vacationers were sent to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries after a deck collapsed at a Gulf front home Monday, March 11 after 4 p.m.

Witnesses said it was just another spring break party that started as they so often do, on the deck of a West Beach Boulevard home.

Victoria Jaso, who is in Gulf Shores from the University of Texas San Antonio, was at the house.

 “There was a party there, and it looked really fun," Jaso said.  "So everybody went, and the balcony completely collapsed.  It just like caved in.”

Officials said the young people were thrown down to the sand below, or worse, stuck in the jagged wood which used to form the porch.

According to officials, five students were taken to the hospital by ambulance, and one was taken in a private vehicle.  Officials said the injuries to all six were not life-threatening.

License plates at the home indicate the students throwing the party are in town from Texas. 

A witness told us there were at least 40 people on the deck.

“There were a lot of people over there throughout the week. And we were on our way over there, and we heard a huge crack. And we saw the deck fall down and a lot of people got caved under," he said.  "It was crazy; it was pandemonium.”

Officials said the spring break vacationers had X-rays on some "possible" broken bones.  There were no "obvious" breaks.
