FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WALA) - In Fairhope, dining in some restaurants on Thursday, December 13 means helping two families of Baldwin County sheriff's deputies.
A benefit called "Dining to Donate" is underway. Each restaurant participating will give a portion of sales to the families of Deputy Scott Ward and Deputy Curtis Summerlin.
"They've gone around town and put together a group and offer up anything from 10 to 15 to 20 percent of your sales from the day. So whatever our gross sales are, we'll take a percentage right off the top and cut a check for the cause," said Pete Blohme of Panini Pete's.
"I live in Fairhope, right down the road and eat here about three days a week. So Pete called me and told me to come give back to the community," one patron told Fox10 News.
Baldwin County Deputy Scott Ward and Sgt. Curtis Summerlin were in an officer involved shooting in November. Sadly, Ward lost his life, and Summerlin underwent a number of surgeries after being shot.
Both were involved in an in the Marlow community.
Ward was shot and air-lifted to USA Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
"We take for granted what our officers do and firemen and a lot of our public service and a lot of the work they do we benefit from directly and don't see it. So a chance for myself and the crew to participate it's a little but it goes a long way," Pete said.
Summerlin was injured and underwent several surgeries before being released from the hospital.
