Rain didn't damper Fairhope parades

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WALA) - With the countdown to Fat Tuesday 2013 just hours away, Baldwin County revelers took to the streets for a Mardi Gras parade.

The Order of Mystic Magnolias hit the streets of downtown Fairhope Monday, February 11.

“Fairhope is a great city. They do a great job," said Christopher Kelley, who brought the whole family out. "There are super people here in Fairhope. It’s very family oriented. We love it.”

Mardi Gras season brings folks from all over to the Gulf Coast, some getting their first glimpse at the purple, green, and gold.

"I'm looking forward to it," said James Haas, in town from Indiana. "Just for all the people, excitement and things to do.”

Sharon Chatwood is hooked on this time of year. She’s from Ohio and said she will soon be buying a home in Foley.

“Last year we saw it, and we invited my brother and his wife to come down and experience it with us for a second year.  I’m very excited," Chatwood said. "It’s a great experience, and we heard Fairhope was the place the come; that they had one of the best parades.  This is really a beautiful, clean, lovely community so it’s lovely to be here.  And it feels safe.”

There may be fewer lining the streets of Fairhope, but there’s no shortage in spirit. 

“New Orleans has nothing on Mobile," Kelley said.  "This is where it started. This is where the party is, but it’s good to get away and have fun in Fairhope with just the family.”
