ROBERTSDALE, Ala. (WALA) - Cities and businesses throughout Baldwin County are remembering those affected by the Connecticut elementary school shooting, Friday.

Authorities said a man opened fire inside two classrooms at the school where his mother was a teacher.

According to reports, 26 people were killed, including 20 children.

President Obama ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half staff until Sunset, December 17 .

Robertsdale city employees were out Friday afternoon carrying out that order.

Some said this tragedy hits close to home.

“I mean, I got a child in elementary school,” said Robertsdale Public Works Employee Chris Brock. “I couldn't imagine if something like that happened to him. Like I said, just a lot of anger.”

Businesses like Furniture City in Robertsdale also followed Robertsdale’s lead and lowered its store-front flag.

“We heard word that flags were being lowered in the state of Connecticut,” said manager Jonathan Kitchans. The owner of Furniture City called and found out that the city of Robertsdale was doing that so we wanted to take part.”

Some along the Gulf Coast said  this tragedy has weighed heavy on their mind and they are praying for all those involved.

“I immediately thought of my daughter. She's in first grade,” said Kitchans. “I heard the age. I went to her. My wife works at the school where my daughter goes. I was texting her and again although we're 1000 miles away I just.. I was scared I was frightened.”
