Injured deputy remains in hospital

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - UPDATE - Sunday, Nov. 25: The injured deputy's condition has been downgraded to fair status.

An injured Baldwin County Sheriff's deputy remained in USA Medical Center Saturday evening. 

The injured deputy underwent surgery Friday night. At last update, his condition was serious, but stable.

His name has still not been released but, law enforcement across the Gulf Coast and others are praying for his recovery.

Mobile Police cars were parked outside the USA Medical Center where the deputy was recovering from the injuries he received around 4 p.m. Friday.

Richard Newbill's son is also being treated at USA. Newbill said he was saddened when he learned two deputies had been shot, and that one had died from his injures. 

Newbill said he saw a lot traffic in the hospital Saturday for the injured deputy.

"He's on the sixth floor but there was cops here all day up and down. A lot of people," Newbill said.

Dozens of law enforcement officers gathered at the hospital Friday night to console and support one another.

Sheriff Hoss Mack said like Deputy Scott Ward, who was killed in the shootout,  the injured deputy was also a veteran in the department. He'd been with the sheriff's office more than 10 years.

The sheriff said Michael Jansen was also shot and killed after he opened fired on the deputies.

There are several investigations into what happened on Mallard Lane surrounding the shooting, but Sheriff Mack said the deputies knew they were responding to a potentially volatile situation.

"It was acting on a complaint from a family member, I believe, about this individual being aggressive. As to what all he had done, I'm not sure of yet. But, obviously, it was a serious enough call that three deputies responded and were there when this happened," Sheriff Mack said.
