FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WALA) - The streets of downtown Fairhope were buzzing Wednesday about the city's municipal election.
Council members Debbie Quinn, Dan Stankoski, and Rick Kingrea were not re-elected. Lonnie Mixon, who held seat three, ran for mayor. He lost to incumbent Tim Kant.
"It just seemed like everyone was at odds. Now that they have a new council, we're hoping for a new beginning, and we'll get the city back on track," said Fairhope resident Gail Walley.
It's very well known that some of the council members and Mayor Kant were at odds most of the time. Whether they sided with the council members, or the mayor, many residents said they just wanted change.
"I think it's just a clean sweep, start over. It's not working. When something doesn't work, it doesn't work. There's a lot of animosity right, so let's put new people in," said Ron Meszaros.
"The people spoke. They were ready for change. The council served their time, several of them several terms, had done a good job for the city but I think the citizens were not happy with where the city was going," said downtown business owner Stephanie Reeves.
The only council member to be re-elected was Mike Ford, who will be serving his eighth term.
The new council members are Jack Burrell, Rick Mueller, Diana Brewer, and Kevin Boone.
