Prosidee Pantry to feed Baldwin Co.'s needy for holiday

SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WALA) - Boxes are stacked and packed with food that will hopefully brighten the holidays for some at the Prodisee Pantry in Baldwin County.

The pantry said they expect to serve 1,700 families this Thanksgiving and Amanda Watts’ family is one of them.

Watts is the mother of 12 children, six of whom have muscular dystrophy.

She said her family looks forward to sharing a meal together during the holidays and with the help of Prodisee Pantry, she can make that happen.

“The pantry just really takes up the slack. There's food there where there wouldn't be otherwise and that's kind of a hard thing to say because you want to think that you can provide everything for your family,” said Watts.

She has been coming to the pantry for about two years, and she said a little bit of help from the pantry goes a long way.

“You get some pumpkins, sometimes some sugar. It just helps with all the traditions. I don’t make a lot of desserts during the year so they want pecan pies and pumpkins pies and stuff like that,” said Watts.

She said with handicapped children she has needed a lot of help over the years and going to Prodisee Panty has been a blessing to her family as well as many others in the area.

Deann Servos with Prodisee Pantry said they're feeding 25 percent more Baldwin County families in 2012 compared to last.

She said the face of hunger is invisible in the Baldwin County community and families you wouldn’t expect to be hungry, are.

Servos said those who receive the food are always appreciative.

“Words can’t describe sometimes how they feel the community really cares about them and would step up to make sure their family can sit down to a meal like other families across the nation,” said Servos.

“You leave there realizing there are a lot of people in the same situation and the people that work there always make you feel just like another person. That you just need help right now and everybody goes through that and you just never leave there feeling helpless,” said Watts.
