Questions cloud Gravine Island shooting

BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WALA) - TEEN GIRL SHOT ON ISLAND

On Monday, Gravine Island on the Tensaw River is a quiet place. But over the weekend, officials say 17-year-old Summer Moody was shot in the head there.

Rumors abound about why the shooting happened at 4 a.m. on the secluded island. According to Baldwin County Sheriff Huey "Hoss" Mack, Moody was on the island with three juvenile boys who officials allege were breaking into a fish camp.

While police said it remains unclear which fish camp Moody was shot at, they said they believe she was shot when some men became aware of the teens’ presence at the camp.

“At some point in time, a couple of gentleman became alerted to their presence as they were breaking into there. We believe, at this time, that both of these individuals fired one shot each. It would appear that she was struck by one of the bullets,” Sheriff Mack said.

SHOOTER NOT ARRESTED

Police said the men they believe did the shooting have been questioned, but not arrested.

“It is being alleged that the shots were a warning type in nature, but we are still investigating what that was,” Sheriff Mack said.

The police are also investigating if the teen was shot in self defense.

“It’s got to be a reasonable belief. It has to be equal force or appropriate force to answer the threat. It’s very legally complicated,” Baldwin County District Attorney Hallie Dixon said.

MORE CHARGES POSSIBLE

Police said Moody may face charges herself. The juvenile boys she was with already have been charged with third degree burglary.

“That is a part of the totality of the investigation, to see what her involvement was or wasn’t in this case,” Sheriff Mack said.
