Retrial date set in Nodine murder case

BAY MINETTE, Alabama (WALA) - Officials say Baldwin County Judge Charles Partin has set a date for the retrial for Steve Nodine, who is accused of shooting his longtime girlfriend Angel Downs. It has been set for February 28.

Monday, a jury convicted Nodine on one of three charges he faced. They found him guilty of ethics violation, but the judge declared a mistrial on the murder and stalking charges because they couldn't come up with a unanimous vote.

The trial lasted two weeks, and jurors deliberated for about seven hours.

The ethics charge is a Class A misdemeanor. By charging Nodine with ethics violation, the jury does believe he abused his privileges while he was a Mobile County commissioner.

With his future still undetermined, his attorney Dennis Knizley spoke to FOX10 News Tuesday about what's next.

A few knocks, and Steve Nodine came to the door. He didn't want to talk and stayed inside the home where he's been living for months.

"Because the case is mistried, it's as if it never came up, it's the same bond conditions as it was," said Dennis Knizley.

Knizley said not much has changed now that the trial is done.

"He'll be staying at the home he's been staying at under electronic monitoring," Knizley explained.

Knizley said he has no plans to try to change any of the bond orders Nodine has been given.

"His movements are limited to lawyers and doctor visits and church and a few other things but he's on the same conditions he was before," Knizley said.

Knizley said he hasn't gotten any word from incoming Baldwin County District Attorney Hallie Dixon about a retrial, and said if and when that comes, the situation will be re-evaluated.

Knizley said there has been no mention of a plea agreement between he and Nodine. Knizley also said as of now, there are no plans to.
