School officials plead for renewal of penny tax

DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - Baldwin County Public School officials said Tuesday that the "penny tax" slated to be on the county's Nov. 6 general election  ballot is a "financial lifeline for the school district."

Superintendent Dr. Alan T. Lee and School Board President Angie Swiger held a press conference at 10:30 a.m. at Daphne High School. Officials said the tax, approved as an emergency tax in 2003, will expire in 2013 and, if it does, schools will lose $27 million in revenue.

Officials released a list of possible cuts that included "major school closures and the termination of hundreds of school employees."

The tax will appear on the ballot at on Nov. 6 as Baldwin Amendment 2.
