DAPHNE, Alabama (WALA) - For the first time, the Baldwin County School Board is making reference to bullying based on sexual preference.
Beginning this school year, school board members enacted a policy where students can not be bullied based on sexual preference, that includes heterosexual or homosexual remarks.
Daphne High School Principal Don Blanchard said offensive gay or straight remarks will not be accepted at his school.
"There are 1,128 students here. If you don't like one, there are 1,127 more to find a friend with," said Blanchard.
Blanchard said he understands why it is so important that a policy is put in place to address the issue.
"While you are here, we want you to feel good about yourself. We want you to find your place," Blanchard explained.
There has always been a policy in place, but it never included sexual preference.
"We will not tolerate any kind of disrespect towards our students," said school system spokesman Terry Wilhite.
Administrators said they have not had any serious issues when it comes to sexual preference, but they wanted the handbook to cover all grounds.
"In this day and age, we want to cover all issues," said Wilhite.
Board members said bullying could lead to serious self esteem issues or even suicide.
Students are encouraged to report this type behavior. Anyone who is caught could be suspended or expelled.
"Why somebody is picking on you really doesn't matter to me. We are going to stop that, so that individual has their best chance of success," added Blanchard.
According to the student code of conduct in Mobile County, there is no sexual preference language included in its bullying policy.
The state legislature did pass the Student Harassment Act that went into effect this year. It requires all government school boards to have a policy in place to address bullying. However, it is up to the local officials to decide what language is used in their respective districts.
