Turkey Take Out In Foley

FOLEY, Ala. (WALA) - Wednesday, November 21, volunteers in Foley geared up for the third annual Turkey Take Out

Hundreds of needy families received a full Thanksgiving dinner thanks to their dedication.

Six big grills worked overtime at Foley Elementary School, where more than 100 turkeys were cooked.

 "I've got this idea. I've got the school here. I have a cafeteria. Let's get together let's do something, let's make something happen and it just exploded from there," said Foley Elementary School Principal Bill Lawrence.

Lawrence helped create the event. The turkeys, the sides and the canned goods will be put together and feed more than 1,000 people that wouldn't have had much else on Thanksgiving.

"We think were making a big difference. The first year we fed 250; last year, 500; and now, we’re (feeding) over a 1,000,” said Lawrence.

People continued to donate items throughout the event.

"I feel very fortunate for what I have and very blessed. It feels good to do for someone else that's not so fortunate," said Elaine Petty as she was dropping off items for donation.

It's this kind of community spirit that has made the Turkey Take Out Possible.

"I think it's a great family opportunity for mothers and fathers to have their children come together and meet the needs of people. I think that's truly what Thanksgiving is all about," Petty said.

Event organizers said they hope this annual event will continue growing and serving the community.

Volunteers will be delivering meals starting at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.
