BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WALA) - A Bay Minette woman was air-lifted to USA Medical Center with critical injuries after she was hit by a train on July 23.
"We got a phone call saying she got hit by a train and she was in ICU so we went right over there," said Lambert’s cousin, Emily Kirchharr.
The Baldwin County Sheriff's office said 29-year-old Crystal Lambert was laying on the tracks in-between the rails and didn't respond to the horns and lights from the approaching train.
A home security camera near the scene shows Lambert and Dewayne Sprinkle about an hour before the accident. The footage shows they argued after running out of gas about a mile from the crossing, Lambert left and headed toward the tracks.
Sprinkle was arrested, but not because of the train accident. He was booked on two traffic warrants.
Lambert is still in the intensive care unit at USA. Family members said Lambert has been through some extensive surgery.
"They took off the left part of her skull because her brain was swelling. And then, they took the bolts and tubes out of her head the other day so that made the swelling go down,” Kirchharr said.
It has been an emotional journey for loved ones but fortunately, a hopeful one. With visits to the hospital every day, relatives said they are praying and waiting for Lambert’s recovery.
"It got a lot better when she started breathing on her own. It made her a lot better,” Kirchharr said. "Everybody's ready for her to wake up. It's time for her to wake up."
Kirchharr said Lambert is a mother of four and very close to her family.
“She is great. She has a wonderful personality. She loves her family and her kids, and she is a hard worker. She is a really good person,” she said.
