U.S. 98 wreck claims life of 3-year-old

DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) -  

A tragic accident on U.S. Hwy. 98 in Daphne on Friday, February 1 claimed a second life.

Three-year-old Lathan Jeremiah Chaney passed away Thursday evening, February 7 at Sacred Heart Hospital from his injuries.

With the prayers of a whole community going out to him, Lathan Chaney fought for nearly a week to stay alive. 

Police said on Friday, February 1, a teenage girl on her way to school lost control of her car on Highway 98 and smashed into the car driven by 47-year-old Che’Quita Chaney-Grier, known as Fay by her family and friends.

“As of right now, there’s no charges. There’s no charges, but we will continue to investigate this accident and make a determination,” said Daphne Police Chief David Carpenter.

Also injured in the accident were Lathan’s older sister and mother.  Both have been released from the hospital and are recovering from their injuries. 

Grier was a counselor with Project Rebound and had dedicated her life to helping others in need.  Those who worked with her remember her as a wonderful person.

“She actually counseled families that were impacted by the oil spill,” said State Director of Project Rebound Paige Rucker.  “She worked in the schools, so she was a counselor that actually helped people.  She did a lot in this community so it was very, very sad when we lost her.”

Family shared some thoughts about little Lathan.  One of his favorite characters was Mater from the movie Cars.  They said he loved sneaking treats and playing outside.  Family said his smile is the thing they will really miss.

Chief Carpenter said his department is still investigating the accident, but he wants to caution people not to listen to rumors or speculations as to why it may have happened.

“We’re looking at everything,” Carpenter noted.  “We got information that a cell phone was involved .So actually, we’ll try to subpoena the records and see what’s happening with her cell phone at that time.”

Whatever the findings of the investigation, the lives of two families are now forever changed. 

Grier’s funeral is at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 9, at Restoration Fellowship Ministries in Daphne and is open to the public.  The family is working toward a joint service to include Lathan. 

A fund has been set up through Project Rebound to help the Chaney family with funeral and medical expenses.
