JCSO helps one of their own after fire

JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WALA) - A detective with the Jackson County, Miss.Sheriff’s Department lost his home over the weekend in a fire.

 The fire started Saturday, March 16, and Detective Mickie Powell said the Mobile Home was gone in minutes. What’s left of the Powell’s home of more than 27 years in two dumpsters and the lot where it stood is empty.

It’s taken a lot of hard work to get to this point, and Powell’s law enforcement family has been by his side.

It’s not just Powell who has dedicated his career to the community, fighting crime is a family affair.  Powell’s two sons and other relatives are all members of the sheriff’s department.  

Powell’s sons, Detective Chad Powell and Deputy Joshua Powell grew up in the home.   

“Devastating, it’s really devastating. The first thing you do waking up and seeing your parents’ house on fire… It’s horrifying not knowing what’s going on, not knowing if anyone if is inside. It’s quite scary,” Joshua Powell said.

Since the home caught fire, their brothers and sisters with the sheriff’s department have been by their side.  

“It’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever felt, seeing everyone coming together showing their support. Our department coming together showing their support it’s awesome,” said Joshua Powell.

Some deputies stopped by after work, others on their off days.

“It’s one big family we all jump on and we help each other,” said Chad Powell.

Between phone calls, manual labor and all around support, the Powell’s said they have been embraced by their law enforcement family.   

"It’s been a blessing we have had people show up from everywhere," said Chad Powell.

But there is still a long way to go.

“They would give you the shirt off their back; and right now, they are in need and anyone that is willing to help is greatly appreciated,” said Joshua Powell.
