Palm trees greet Biloxi visitors

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) -  Eight tall palm trees are the latest additions to a beautification project in Biloxi at U.S. Highway 90 and the Interstate 110 loop.

Harrison County supervisor Windy Swetman organized the project, which he likens to decorating a front porch that greets visitors.

The eight new palms are in addition to a grove of 30 existing palm trees that has been welcoming visitors for the past two years. And Swetman tells WLOX TV (http://bit.ly/LuhvyI) that even more are on the way. Thirty additional palms are planned for the area.

Local officials say surveys of tourists show that appearance matters.

Coming soon to the new row of palm trees is a special system of LED lights that will illuminate the palms in different colors for the different holidays.
