BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (AP) - Dredging for beach restoration has closed a second section of beach at Bay St. Louis.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality says dredging can release large numbers of bacteria trapped in the floor of Mississippi Sound. They say it also can cause dangerous physical conditions including unpredictable terrain, surf, and quicksand. And it brings heavy equipment into the area.
The section closed Friday is Lakeshore Beach from the Silver Slipper Casino eastward to the jetty west of Poinset Ave. — the area monitored by beach station No. 1.
Bay St. Louis Beach, monitored by Station 4, remains closed for the same reason.
The department will reopen the beaches once the work is done and The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory notifies the agency that bacteria levels are safe.
