BILOXI, Miss. (WALA) - There is no beach access for South Mississippians right now. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality shut down the beaches, because of debris and water quality concerns.
Officials said there could be hazardous debris on the beaches and have issued a precautionary beach closure.
Locals seem to already know, Biloxi Beach may not be the most relaxing place to spend the weekend.
“You know, walking at night, you could step on the nails. We got still tree limbs falling still,” said Biloxi resident Billy Swords.
One woman was rescuing birds along the shore and said they are worn out from the severe weather.
“I went up to a pelican yesterday and I tapped it and he didn't move, then I shook it and then it got up and flew away. It was really tired; all of these birds are very tired,” she said.
The department plans to open the beaches when water quality standards have been met.
Folks who still want to go to Biloxi for the weekend can head to the casinos. They have been re-opened just in time for Labor Day Weekend
