JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WALA) - On Wednesday, November 28, investigators with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department arrested and charged a 20-year-old man with an uttering forgery offense.

Deputies said Matthew Alexander Holt took a blank check form a Hurley resident while at the victim's home. According to reports the victim is an acquaintance of Holt. Officials said Holt forged a $60 check to himself and signed the victim's name.

Investigators said on November 21, Holt tried to cash the check at the victim's bank, and bank personnel realized the signature was not the account holder's and refused to cash the check.

The bank notified the victim who then contacted Jackson County Sheriff's Department's Criminal Investigation Division.

Holt had an initial appearance in Jackson County and his bond was set at $1,000. As of November 28, he was still in Jackson County Adult Detention Center.

Holt could be sentenced up to 10 years in prison and $10,000 fine, if convicted.
