Did prisoner telegraph his escape?

Said "I'll be out before I reach down there"

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - It started as a routine walk from the back of the Mobile police department to a patrol car. It's so routine it has a name; a "perp" walk for perpetrator.

But it ended in a way no one expected, except, maybe for the perp.

Robbery suspect Lawrence Wallace started to talk almost from the moment he stepped from the back door of the Mobile Police Department Friday afternoon.

Wallace said,  "I told him make sure y'all get that whole 36 right there. You see that don't you? You see that, that's a whole 36. If you want it, you can get a split. That's a 9 right there. You know what I'm talking about. Quarter and a penny. Mob town. What it is. I'll be out before I reach down there. Bigger than the mayor on the neck."

Let's break that down. As he's being led into the car, Wallace has a medallion on a chain around his neck. But there's something else behind it. Was it a box cutter? Maybe the investigation will tell us.

While it appears he was handcuffed, our videotape clearly shows his flexibility as he moves his hand around his back to show off the medallion. Is it possible he was able to bring his cuffs around to the front of his body during the ride to jail. Right now, police aren't saying.

It's believed when Wallace said, "Quarter and a penny", he was talking about Mobile's area code. 2-5-1. Mob town? Mobile.

What's even more ominous was when Wallace said,  "I'll be out before I reach down there."

"There" was the metro jail "sallyport". That's where police say Wallace attacked Officer Green.
