Helping Hands for Haiti

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Volunteers of America Southeast and Springhill Toyota are teaming up with FOX10 to offer a helping hand to those in Haiti affected by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Haitian officials say there is a long list of much-needed supplies including water, baby formula, and medical supplies, and they need your help.

FOX10 and VOA will be holding a drive for Haiti supplies on January 29 at Springhill Toyota. You can stop by and leave your donations of supplies or money from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It's part of our "Helping Hands for Haiti".

Volunteers of America Southeast currently has direct connections with an established orphanage in Haiti called God's Littlest Angels. God's Littlest Angels is an independent, non-denominational ministry founded to care for premature, malnourished, and abandoned children in Haiti. They currently have 170 children in their care and are working with Haitian Social Services to help additional children affected by the earthquake.

Supplies requested from Haitian orphanages*:

  • Formula
  • Diapers
  • Baby wipes
  • Baby cereal
  • Infant Tylenol
  • Infant and children's vitamins
  • Baby care items such as lotion, powder, baby shampoo
  • Antibiotics
  • IV solution
  • Disposable medical gloves
  • Suture material
  • Bottled Water
  • Red beans to add to rice
  • Sugar
  • Oil
  • Blankets
  • Tents
  • Tarps

Case-packaged or pallet items needed*:

  • Baby formula
  • Medical supplies
  • Snack-type foods (granola bars, etc.)
  • Peanut butter
  • Flash lights
  • Batteries
  • First aid kits

*All expiration dates on items have to be more than one year before shipping.

The containers of emergency supplies will be shipped to Haiti as soon as the seaport is opened. The VOA is also recruiting volunteer nurses and doctors to work in Haiti in the near future.
