Krispy Kreme closes after 40 years

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Workers busied themselves boarding up windows to the landmark Krispy Kreme building in downtown Mobile.

A landmark for some for as long as many people can remember, the doughnut shop is closing its doors for good.

The restaurant, which had operated continuously on Government street since 1971, has been a piece of Mobile history for four decades.

Henry Barnes stopped to watch the boards go up over the windows.

"I use to stop here every morning on the way to McGill for high school," said Barnes. "I would get my sugar rush before school."

Barnes said it is sad to see the restaurant close down, after all these years.

Other people stopped and took a picture of the boards going up.

Krispy Kreme's general manager said the restaurant was not thriving, and efforts to put in a drive thru had failed.

The restaurant at Hillcrest and Airport has a drive thru that does well, which the manager said was part of the reason for closing the Government Street location.
