The man accused of critically wounding an Okaloosa County Deputy last week has died. The sheriff's office said officers fired back after David Lewis opened fire on Deputy Steve Hough December 9.

Hough, a member of the U.S. Marshals Task Force, was serving a warrant at Lewis' home at the time. Investigators report before he even got to the door, Lewis opened fire with two handguns. Deputy Hough was struck in the face and leg.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office released a statement late Thursday evening stating that David Lewis died from his injuries. He had been at Sacred Heart Hospital since the incident.
