MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A second suspect in now officially behind bars and charged with capital murder. Thursday, 26-year-old Tavares Jones was released from USA Medical Center where he had been receiving treatment. Police said Jones was grazed in the head when he and two others invaded a home on Old Military Road and killed two people inside.
"I can tell you young Glenn was shot in the living room. They made contact with him first," said Police Chief Micheal T. Williams.
Police said when the suspects broke down the door and shot the teenager, the noise awoke his grandfather, Willie Sullivan, Sr. When Sullivan, Sr. heard the commotion at the front of the home, police said he got up and started shooting. Police said he was able to make contact with two of the suspects before he succumbed to his injuries.
"In my eyes, Mr. Sullivan is a hero. He did what most men would do. He made an attempt to protect his family. When he heard the door being kicked in, he went to rescue his other family members," Williams said.
FOX10 also learned Thursday that Sullivan's granddaughter, who was also Glenn Sullivan's sister, took cover. She was the only one who made it out alive.
"There was another female inside the home who had enough sense to know something was going on. She hid until the suspects were gone," Williams said.
Mobile police took 28-year-old Ricky Turner to Metro Jail Wednesday while Jones and 25-year-old Bryant Reynolds remained at USA. Reynolds' head was also grazed by a bullet and he was hit in the shoulder and wrist.
Reynolds remains at USA Medical Center, but police said his release should come soon. Police said that they were linked so quickly to the double murder because the two suspects went to the hospital for treatment after they were shot.
Chief Williams went on to say that prayers and thoughts are with the Sullivan family.
