33 arrested in prostitution bust

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile police hit the streets January 24 and 25 for a prostitution sting. The department released details of the two day operation on January 28.

Police said they arrested all ages, races, gender, and even a teenager during the bust.

A total of 33 people were arrested both for prostitution and patronizing, or the "johns."

Cpl. Chris Levy said many are repeat offenders.

"Unfortunately, they will be back at it. Probably pretty soon, and we do have people that have decades of prostitution arrests,” said Levy.

Police hit commercial areas like Airport and Hillcrest and residential street corners like Marine and Palmetto in Oakleigh.

A block up, at Broad and Palmetto is where Pastor Brenda Westry's church sits. It's also where five men were arrested in the sting.

"I’m not shocked. I'm just glad to see the police around in the area because God knows we need help,” said Westry.

One man arrested on Westry's block wasn't booked for prostitution, but instead for drinking in public and an outstanding warrant. There are more like him.

Levy said the crimes that surround prostitution are often more dangerous.

"It's been around forever, and you’re not going to get rid of it. The problem is the other crime that surrounds prostitution,” said Levy.

He said crimes like robbery, rape, drugs and burglary often occurred in the same areas.

"I’m asking all the community to start praying and seeking God and help all this crime happening in our city today,” said Westry.
