MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. - Alabama State Troopers report a driver under the influence of a controlled substance is to blame for a car crash that sent five people to the hospital including a pregnant woman.
The wreck happened Saturday in Irvington near Meadow Lane.
Doctors performed emergency surgery in hopes of saving the baby.
Britney Godsey holds her four-year-old niece outside of USA Medical Center in Mobile. The little girl has a bruise on her face and one on her leg. Godsey said her other niece, one day old Caylen is a miracle.
"The baby is doing good now, she was taking off of the ventilator and breathing on her own," said Godsey.
Caylen Dorry was born by emergency Caesarian section, after Alabama state troopers said a driver under the influence of a controlled substance crashed into her family's truck.
Godsey said her father called her with news of the wreck.
"I had ten missed calls from my Dad and brother and when I called them back Dad said they were at the accident scene," said Godsey.
"I said what scene and he told me David, Ashley and the girls were in a wreck and were being life flighted," said Godsey holding back tears.
Baby Caylen's mother Ashley, father David and two sisters, 4-year-old Camrynn and 3-year-old Chelsea were all in 2000 S-10 pick up truck, when a Mazda truck driven by a 17-year-old male did not stop and struck Eileen Hodges in the rear forcing her into oncoming traffic. Ms Hodges was hit head on by David Corry.
"Both girls were hysterical and upset, but they are doing good now," said Godsey.
The crash happened Saturday on the Irvington Bayou La Batre Highway. Orange paint marks the scene.
State troopers say a 17-year-old driver plowed into Hodges car, forcing it to crash head on into the Corry's truck.
Dwain Corry said his son is still recovering.
"The last cat scan thought he had brain injury so that was scary, his knees are pretty busted up," said Corry.
As for the teen driver state troopers believe caused the whole thing, he could be in serious trouble.
"Could be charges pending, depending on the outcome of the toxicology results," said Cpl. Steven Smith with the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
Cpl. Smith said blood was drawn at the scene.
The Hodges report Eileen is recovering at home. The Hodges family said there have been a lot of wrecks on the patch of road where the crash happened.
Britney Godsey said her sister Ashley broke her pelvis in the wreck and is still in a lot of pain.
"They are going to need a lot of help, they now have three children and both are going to be out of work for a while because of this," said Godsey.
A fund is being set up to help the family.
