MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The family of a 6-year-old girl who captured the hearts of people in Mobile a couple of years ago said she is now cancer free, and they are reminding the community donating blood can save a life.
There is a button with a picture of 4-year-old Hailey Jones about two years ago when she was undergoing chemotherapy to fight to Leukemia.
Now, her hair has grown back, and she's getting gifts and a cake from staff members at LifeSouth Community Blood Centers.
Her mother Amber Lavender said the family is overcome with joy.
Lavender said, "Angels sang, didn't they, when we learned you didn't have cancer anymore? It was awesome."
During chemotherapy, Hailey received two to three blood transfusions a week.
Now, her mother said the family wants to remind others to give blood.
Lavender said, "There are still kids with cancer. There are still people in wrecks. There are still people that, every day, have transfusions."
LifeSouth Community Development Coordinator Angela Williams said, "When you give here at LifeSouth, it actually stays in our community, to help a friend or relative, and, one in seven people who enter the hospital need blood."
Hailey's mother also talked about how her daughter gave her strength.
Lavender said, "She would be put to sleep for chemo, and be ordering food before she went back, and, she would wake up and know what she ordered, and it would be sitting up there waiting on her. So, she was our trooper."
Hailey's final chemo treatment was back in August.
