MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - On Thursday, Nov. 29, the woman in the middle of a controversial assault investigation spoke to FOX10 News.
Ally Hawkins said she believes her brother Travis Hawkins, Jr. attacked her girlfriend Mallory Owens because of previous decisions the couple made involving drugs and sex.
"People keep saying it’s a hate crime, and it's not a hate crime, " said Ally Hawkins.
She said Hawkins, Jr. found out she was involved in some risky behavior.
"We were really bad on drugs," Ally said.
However, Ally said drugs weren’t the only questionable behavior they were involved in.
"He found out that me and Mallory had done prostitution," she said.
Ally said her brother believed Owens was a bad influence on her and became angry.
"First time, we both did it together. And the second time, it wasn't like that. But I don't blame her for it all the way, because I could have said no," she said.
Ally said the choices she and Owens have made caused the incident. However, she said she takes responsibility for those decisions.
“The only reason that there's ever been any issues with Mallory is because of the decisions me and Mallory were making together. Because, at the end of the day, I'm the one that made the decisions that I have to live with,” she said.
Mobile police said Hawkins, Jr. attacked Owens on Thanksgiving Day, and Owens spent several days recovering at USA Medical Center.
On Nov. 26, Owens’ mother claimed Hawkins, Jr. attacked Owens because she’s gay.
"Oh, yes, I know they don't approve of it. This isn't the first time he has attacked Mallory,” said Kristi Taylor, Owens’ mother.
After Owens’ was released from the hospital, she disputed her mother’s claim .
