Runs in early July

DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - Alabama Governor Robert Bentley stopped at the Home Depot in Daphne on Monday, not to shop, but to sell the state's upcoming sales tax holiday.

"I'm glad to be at Home Depot. It's one of my favorite stores," said Governor Bentley.

The sales tax free holiday runs from July 6 through July 8.

There are a number of smaller qualifying items which cost less than $60, and some qualifying generators that cost less than $1,000.

The announcement seems to be timed perfectly with Tropical Storm Debby skirting the Southern Gulf Coast.

"It's very apropos that she is out there as we talk about preparing for a tax free holiday," said Governor Bentley.

Governor Bentley credits the Tornado Action Recovery Council, formed after last year's deadly tornadoes, for recommending the state sales tax holiday for severe weather shopping.

"This is a good way for anyone to prepare for a natural disaster," said Governor Bentley.

Governor Bentley said next year the sales tax holiday will take place in February to coincide with the severe weather preparedness week.

"It will help retailers, you'd think that tax free holidays would hurt they really help because they bring people out and they shop for other things," said Governor Bentley.

The Alabama State Department of Revenue had more information about the program.
