MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Family members say D’Angelo Winston, 15, died from his injuries Monday evening, nearly three days after he was hit by a train.
“Oh I can’t explain it,” said Winston’s great grandmother Bennie Winston. “It was terrible. I just, I just couldn’t believe it.”
FOX10 caught up with Winston’s family Tuesday.
They said he was a very ambitious teen who was thinking about pursuing a career in medicine.
“He was telling me that he wanted to be a nurse,” said Bennie Winston. “I said G; you know you can be anything you want to be.”
Relatives said D’Angelo and his best friend were walking home along the train tracks after staying at a friend’s house.
Police said the teens were heading westbound between D.I.P. and Navco Road on Saturday morning.
Family of the surviving victim said the boys didn’t hear a train approaching until it was too close.
The victim told them they panicked and ran forward before trying to jump off to the side.
While one of the teen’s escaped with minor injuries, D’Angelo was rushed to USA Medical center in critical condition.
Relatives said they had their last goodbyes at the hospital, where D’Angelo’s 8-year-old brother made him a promise.
“He said, ‘G, I'm going to miss you,’” aunt Roxie Pearson told FOX10. “He said, ‘I love you man.’ He said, ‘You know what? I'm going to take care of mamma just like you took care of me.’”
The surviving victim is also 15 years old.
His family tells FOX10 the boy has remained fairly silent since the tragedy.
If you would like to help the Winston family with memorial expenses, a benefit account has been setup at Compass Bank under his name.
