MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Father Thomas D. Weise celebrated 50 years as a Roman Catholic Priest on Father’s Day with members of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

City Council Member William Carroll, Mayor Sam Jones and other members of Mobile City Council proclaimed Sunday, June 17 as “Father Thomas D. Weise Day” in Mobile.

Nearly 200 people gathered near St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Sunday afternoon in honor of Father Weise's half decade of service.

Weise was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest on May 31, 1962 and has served in churches throughout Alabama, but he hasn't stopped there.

Weise said he has traveled the world as a missionary and was even shot at while in Vietnam.

Fortunately, he wasn't hit and continues his work in Alabama.
