MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A memorial of stuffed animals and flowers lies across the steps of a home on Raven Drive.

Police said 20-year-old Frederick Williams was shot multiple times Monday afternoon and taken to USA Medical Center, where he died.

Friends and neighbors said they didn't recognize the man who shot Williams.

“He (the suspect) basically got out of the car and walked down the street. It was a random act. For what reason, we don't know. But, we will do our best to get to the bottom of it,” said a friend of Williams.

“It’s early in the investigation. We don't have anyone in custody at this point so we're searching the area seeing if we have any witnesses. We’re collecting evidence from the scene asking for help from the public,” said Cpl. Chris Levy with the Mobile Police Department.

Those who live on Raven Drive said Tuesday was especially sad because Williams was supposed to start a job working in a shipyard.

“Today was his day to leave and go to the boat. He was leaving to go do something with his life and get out of the street life,” said Williams’ friend.

While FOX10 was on Raven Drive speaking with neighbors, a gunshot went off across the street. Mobile Police responded immediately. Ashley Rains, a spokesperson with the police department, confirms that no one was injured during the incident.

But, that wasn't the case when Williams was shot Monday.

“A man walked up, pulled out a .40 caliber and let 17 rounds loose. Shot him 17 times in his back,” said Williams’ friend.

Neighbors said the shooting happened around 2:45 p.m. on Monday when kids were getting out of school.

“The officers are canvassing the area to determine if anyone saw anything or heard anything. Maybe they saw something; they didn’t realize they were seeing like a suspect leave the crime scene,” Levy said.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Williams' cousin said $300-$500 has been raised to give Williams a proper burial.
