Accident slows traffic northbound on I-65

MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - UPDATE: Mobile Police say a fire on I-65 north happened when a Cadillac collided with an 18 wheeler, striking the 18 wheeler in the fuel tank.

Officials say the driver of the car, Curtis Balls, jumped out of his vehicle and ran from the scene.

Police were able to catch up with him a short time later in a parking lot on the east side of the interstate near Moffett Road.

He was later ticketed for leaving the scene of an accident.

Police say Balls sustained burn injuries from the fire. He was taken to a local hospital for observation.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.

Both vehicles were completely destroyed by the fire.

4:11 p.m. FOX 10 news has received calls that there is a bad accident on I-65 North near Moffett Road.

Callers tell us that there seems to be an 18-wheeler and another vehicle on fire. Traffic is moving slowly.

We are trying to get more information from the Mobile Police Department and Alabama State Troopers.
